The regular season came to a close as the playoffs got underway last week. Using a best of three game format, eight teams were paired in four playoffs with the highest seed playing the lowest seed, the second highest pairing with the second lowest and so on. As of this writing, three of the playoffs have concluded and the fourth had only played one game. The winners of each playoff will next meet in a semi-final best of five game series. Semi-final playoff games started earlier in the week and continue tonight (Thursday) and should conclude by Monday. Game times are at 6:30 and 8:15. The finals are scheduled to start on Tuesday with all games beginning at 7 PM. Come up to M Street Park and cheer on the leagues best as they play for the championship.

In the first series, the defending champion Sam Moran Club needed only two games to eliminate the Olde Time Hardware. In game one, Moran scored six runs in the first inning and cruised to an 11-0 victory. Game two was not much different as the Olde Time Hardware looked as if they were ready to throw in the towel. After four innings, Moran led 6-0 and was simply too much. John Gregorio was the winning pitcher and earned the shutout in both games. The Sam Moran Club now awaits the winner of the Molly Darcy and Boston Beer Garden series.

In the second series, the Sidewalk Café took on Sullivan’s Pub. Sully’s Pub would need a strong pitching performance from veteran ace pitcher John McGrath. McGrath gave it all he had but it was not to be as the Sidewalk Café’s offense found the holes and went on to win 11-0. The second game was not much different as the hot bats of the Sidewalk Café continued to wreak havoc for Sullivan’s Pub. Tommy Connolly and Dennis Lynch led the way for Sidewalk as they cruised to a 12-4 victory. The Sidewalk Café will now face the Seapoint Restaurant in a rematch of last year’s semi-final.

In the third series, the Quencher Tavern gave the Seapoint Restaurant a scare but eventually lost both games. Both losses were very disappointing for the Quencher Tavern as victory was near. In the first game, the score was tied at four with two outs and a man on first in the bottom of the fifth inning. The next batter reached base on an infield error. That error would prove very costly for Quencher. Seapoint’s Tony Jiminez followed with a homerun to left field which gave the Seapoint a lead that they would not give up as they went on to win 7-4. The second game of the series was another close game that came down to one play. In the top of the sixth inning the score was tied at two. Again, Tony Jiminez who was standing on second base was involved in the deciding play of the game. Pat Sullivan delivered a single up the middle and Jiminez took off for third and was heading for home. Quencher’s center fielder Joe Pano grabbed the rolling ball and threw it towards home plate. With Jiminez bearing down from third and with the ball bouncing in from center, the catcher could not find a handle as Jiminez slid safely into home with the lead run. Seapoint then played solid defense for two innings behind pitcher Jay Malley as they earned a 3-2 victory in a well played game.

In the fourth series, Molly Darcy’s edged out the Boston Beer Garden 11-10 in the first and only game played thus far. Ed McKenna provided the key hit for Molly’s in the early going as they jumped out to an 11-4 lead. In the seventh inning and with the game seemingly in the bag, the Beer Garden bats came to life. The Beer Garden scored six runs in an inning that was punctuated with Sean Malone’s three-run homerun to left field. But the rally fell one run short and the Beer Garden will now try and even the series in game two. The Sam Moran Club awaits the winner of this series. See you at the park!
