M STREET SOFTBALL

With less than five weeks remaining in the regular season, the league has moved past the halfway point and is heading down the stretch towards the playoffs. In the Lucas division, it's the Lynx who are enjoying an undefeated season and a three game lead over the Stadium. Meanwhile, the race is very hot in the Feeney division with the Boston Beer Garden (9-3) holding a slim half game lead over their friendly rival - Il Giardino Café (9-4). The young and athletic Greatest Bar (9-2-1) have L Street Tavern (7-4) and Murphy's Law (7-6) creeping up behind them but are still ahead by two games in the Moran division.

Looking back at last week's games we saw the Sidewalk Café string together a couple of wins against the Brewers and Full Tilt on Monday evening. The nightcap featured the L Street Tavern and Greatest Bar with L Street needing a win to close the gap in the division. However, it wasn't to be as the Greatest Bar got plenty of hitting and some great defense lead by Kevin Sheppard's great glove work at second base and won easily, 25-12.

On Tuesday, the Tweeter club got away from the on/off field distractions and got back to playing softball. The Bushwhackers kept them in check for most of the way but couldn't score many runs themselves as they fell victim to pitcher Eric Malerba's off speed stuff and lost, 11-3. Next up was a great match up of talent as the Lynx took on El Presidente, who was trying to prove that they should be considered a contender in the Lucas division. The Presidente boys played great but again fell victim to lefty Nick French and the Lynx, 8-3. The nightcap was a rematch of the two teams and some observers say that this was the game of the year. It was Joey Venuti who took the hill for El Presidente and was looking for a redemption win against his rival. The game went back and forth with both teams taking the lead only to watch the other team take it right back. In the end, it was darkness that halted the see-saw battle as the lights went out with the score knotted at 12-12. The game will go down in the books as a tie and will be remembered for some time.

Wednesday night saw Il Giardino take on the Ballot Squad in a Feeney division doubleheader. The Ballot Squad held their own against one of the division powers but fell in both games, 11-9 and 10-5. Ballott Squad's Mark Goodman has been learning the craft of pitching this year and is impressing many. Keep working at it! The late game saw Murphy's Law flex their muscles in an 18-2 pounding over the Dorset Club. At 4-5-1, the Dorset Club has played the fewest games and remains in the Moran division playoff race.

Thursday's action had the Sidewalk Café back on the field for two more games as they locked horns with the Stadium Club. It was all Stadium in the first game as John Gregorio and company cruised to a 12-4 victory. Sidewalk then turned the tables and took a big lead in game two only to watch the Stadium chip away and get to within a run before falling, 11-10. The nightcap saw the "under equipped" Beer Garden sneak by the Isotopes, 13-8. The Beer Garden player with all of the bats & equipment ran into car trouble on the way to the game. I was told that they made do by using a discarded chair leg for a bat.

Lastly, several members of the M Street Softball League took part in a tournament held this past weekend in Chester, Vermont. Folks, the grounds where this tourney is held were beautiful. The fields were in great shape and the competition was very tough. Fourteen teams from VT, NH, MA, and NY competed in the double elimination tournament. MSSL was represented by the entire Lynx team, along with Mike Hoadley (Legends), Jim Innocent (Legends), Rob Rogers (Legends), Mike Selig (Eagles), Joey Venuti (Eagles), Dan Brown (Eagles), and yours truly (Duncans).

M Street Softball is played Monday through Friday with games starting at 6pm, 7:30, and 9pm. The players look forward to seeing you in our stands at an upcoming game.
