STRONG LEAGUE IS FLOURISHING

In its 37th year of play, the M Street Softball League is flourishing with eighteen teams, three divisions, and plenty of diamond action. Due to the overwhelming interest this year the league has been using both M and N Street fields through the first few weeks of May. They will get back to playing three games a night (6pm, 7:30, and 9pm) on the M Street field starting on Monday, May 28th.

The league has divided the teams into three divisions based on their current talent level. It is hoped that the teams improve each year to the point where they move up a level. The ultimate goal is to play in the Lucas Division against the league's toughest competition. Currently there are four very good teams in this division. The defending champion Sidewalk Café is at the top followed by the Lynx, who are a National tournament team looking to revenge last year's playoff loss to Sidewalk. The Stadium Sports Bar is also in the mix along with a first year team, El Presidente, who has already shown that they belong. It is most likely that your 2007 champion will come out of this division but not before they are battle tested by their Feeney and Moran division foes.

After three weeks of play the schedule has been light and very few games have been played in the Lucas division. The Stadium Sports Bar (3-0) are sitting at the top and looking pretty good but have yet to play a divisional game. Matt Traft and Rob Rogers are providing the big hits so far while pitcher, Sam Acevedo is continuing his remarkable comeback from hand surgery.

The Lynx (2-0) look much improved and have to be the class of the league, at least on paper. Lefty hurler, Nick French, has been added to the fold along with Mike Spinelli (Sox draftee) and Toco Soto (Yankee draftee). These three new additions join an already loaded team with plenty of talent and experience.

Just off the pace is the new entry, El Presidente (1-1). Coach Cliff Ansara has brought his championship winning team from the North Shore league in hopes that the M Street Softball League would provide a competitive arena for his team. They have pitching (Joe Venuti and Hector Frias), talent, are well coached, and have already shown that they are a great fit in the division. Last week they trailed the Lynx 6-1 entering the last inning. Ansara and his boys rallied against French and the Lynx and nearly pulled ahead before falling, 6-5.

Sitting at the bottom of the Lucas division is the Sidewalk Café (0-0). Due to scheduling and a rainout, the defending champions have yet to play a game. They have added Mark Dillon, Brian Ahearn, and Phil Stavrinos while losing Mike Stankina from last year's roster.

In the Feeney division, the Full Tilt squad has been tearing the cover off the ball and has quickly jumped to the top of their division with a 5-1 record. Coach Eric Romiza, is getting great production from Jeremy Covino who can't seem to make an out and is batting .778 with 11 RBI's while pitcher John Pathe remains unbeaten at 5-0. Their only setback was a 20-4 trouncing to the El Presidente club but they rebounded quickly with back to back wins over the Ballot Squad.

The Brewers are just off the mark at 3-2 and are expected to compete for one of the top four spots in what should be a very tight race in this division. Last week, the Brewers locked horns with another division heavyweight in the Boston Beer Garden and came away with a split. Unfortunately, the Brewers lost player Fran Coffey to injury when he dove for a wind-aided pop up. Coffey held onto the ball for the out but landed awkwardly and broke his collar bone in two places. The hustling player has already informed coach Tom Yeo that he will be back before the playoffs in July. Get well Franny!

The Tweeter club currently sits in third place but is looking to make a move to the top of the division in the coming weeks. They are one of the most improved teams in the league thanks to the aggressive off-season recruiting done by Leon Correy (also leads team with 6 RBI). Pitchers Eric Malerba and Steve Mills join a second year team who are serious about competing against the best in this league. Steve Stalcup (SS) and Joe Cavaleri (OF) have also been added to the mix and both have proven to be key additions.

After dropping their first three games of the season, Il Giardino (2-3) has won their last two and look to be getting back on track. Slightly off the pace in the Feeney division are the Boston Beer Garden (1-2), Playwright (0-2), and Ballot Squad (0-4).

Over in the Moran division it's the first year team, Greatest Bar (4-1-1) who look to be the class of the division. Coach Kevin Sheppard is running a well organized and enthusiastic group who has quickly adjusted to their new surroundings. Dan Pencinger (.667 with 11 RBI), Steve Sheppard (.769 with 9 RBI), and Kevin Snow (.591 with 10 RBI) have provided the big hits. Look for the Greatest Bar to be contending all season long.

With a couple of years of growing pains behind them, the L Street Tavern (3-1) is looking like they are ready to make a move and be considered contenders. Coach and pitcher Joe Pillar (.800 avg.) has been working hard in fielding a competitive team and it's finally paying off in wins. Trevor Donelan (.667 with 14 RBI) and Darry Leland (.700 with 10 RBI) have been jump starting the L Street offense.

Following closely behind the pack is another new team, G-Hits (3-3). Led by coach Mark Mahoney, the G-Hits are another young up and coming team in the Moran division. Scott Lavigne (20 hits, .800 avg., with 16 RBI) has wasted no time getting acquainted to the pitching he has faced and will give Moran foes fits all season long.

After going winless last season, the Dorset Club (2-2) is looking good in the early going. Coach Mike Sweeney has added slugger Dave Ballas and infielder Mike Alicia who have provided his team with a much needed lift. The Isotopes (2-2) and Murphy's Law (2-3) are just off the pace and will be looking to make their move to the top this week. Meanwhile, the Bushwhackers (0-7) are still trying to work out the kinks but have found the competition tough so far.

M Street Softball games are played Monday through Thursday starting at 6pm, 7:30, and 9pm with Fridays being used for makeup games. The league does not charge a fee for gate entrance and encourages neighbors, former players, and families to attend league games. Have a safe Memorial Day weekend and we hope to see you in the stands in the coming weeks.
