OPENING DAY ARRIVES ON MONDAY

UPDATE - the season will begin on Monday, May 2. The city would not honor our request to turn the lights on a week earlier as they have in the past. League coaches will be receiving an email within a couple days with a schedule of your first couple of games plus additional information. The season schedule will be completed later in the week and will be posted on the web ASAP.

Opening Day is scheduled for Monday, May 3rd to mark the beginning of another M Street Softball League season. The announced date signals that it's time to dust off those gloves and get the arm in game shape with an easy game of long toss. Some teams will look to forget last season's struggles while others will look to build upon their success. In any case, everyone will begin with a 0-0 record with hopes of making the playoffs and celebrating a championship season on the diamond at M Street.

For generations, the start of another M Street softball season is more than a state of mind. The city fields spring to life, players from South Boston and surrounding communities gather and enjoy the camaraderie the game delivers, and local businesses (ex - Beer Garden, Shenannigans, Murphy's Law) see a sudden increase in revenue as the vast majority of teams walk through the doors for post game food and drink.

A former pitcher once said: "An opener is not like any other game. There's that little extra excitement, a faster beating of the heart. You have that anxiety to get off to a good start, for yourself and for the team. You know that when you win the first one, you can't lose 'em all."

Teams that are interested in taking part of the 2010 season are instructed to contact the league commissioner, Mark Senna (mark3325@hotmail.com). There are a limit number of spaces available with the returning 2009 teams given first priority. The League entry fee of $475 is now due. As in the past, the fee covers the cost of lights and game balls only. Teams will be responsible for umpire fees, game jerseys, and equipment (bats, bases, catchers mask). Please make checks payable to "M Street Softball" and mail or drop off to the address below ASAP.

Note: your team will not be scheduled until this fee is paid in full.
