M STREET SOFTBALL RETURNS

As the season changes to spring, the M Street Softball League is readying itself for another season of play. This year the league will be under both new and old management with hopes on having a season to remember.

Former league commissioner, Jim Menjin is returning and will lend his expertise in league affairs. For those of you that don't remember Jim, he was the commissioner of the league when it was at its best. The pitching was excellent league wide, the players were very competitive, and the stands were filled to capacity every night. It was the combination of good players and Menjin's guidance that made the league a success. He was and is a true commissioner. The league welcomes Jim back.

Jim and I will be working together to try and re-capture some of that old mystique. We are both willing to put in the time and work to make it enjoyable but we realize it will be left up to you the coaches, players, and fans to make it a true success.

In th epast five years the overall league play has suffered. Both players and teams have disapeared from the playing field. The old rivalries, L Street Tavern vs Sam Moran Club, Footprints vs Gannon Club, The Abbey vs all of the above, are no more. Some of the great players of the past have not been seen on the field in some time. Paul Alessi isn't on the mound striking out the side inning by inning. Larry Lucas hasn't made a guest appearance for the Cornerstone in over three years. The fans haven't been able to heckle Richie Madden. Brother Pat Madden isn't hitting his moon shot homeruns to right field anymore. The Jiminez brothers, Tony and Marty are not giving opposing pitchers fits. The Ward brothers, Joey and Brian aren't tracking down every fly ball hit to or near them.

We're looking to bring back some or all of these teams and players to make this season one to remember. The league still has some great players on good teams. But what made these players great was the team they played on and the league is missing these teams. Jim Burgio is still hitting homeruns but for a different team, not his team, L Street Tavern. Pitcher John Gregorio will still throw his curve ball for strikes but he needs his old supporting cast back to make him a winner again.

In our attempt, M Street Softball is appealing to all former and current players to join a team for this upcoming season. We are asking for the following to contact us as soon as possible: Jack Feeney, Ronny Gurley, John McGrath, Sam Moran, Brian Yanovitch, Billy Collins, Larry Lucas, Paul Alessi, Scott Maginess, Timmy Malley, Bill Louberry, and Jason Mazzeo.

The league will begin play on Monday, June 2. Applications are being accepted now and the league is open to all. Any coaches, players, or teams that wish to be a part of this season, should call Mark. Please read the Tribune next week for further announcements, M Street Softball is back; spread the word!
