TEAMS SCRAMBLE FOR PLAYOFF POSITIONS

The lead story so far this year is the uncooperative weather that we’ve had thus far. With last weeks rain canceling six more games combined with the possibility of hurricane Bonnie moving in, the current playoff schedule is in jeopardy. The league will continue to notify coaches on a day to day basis. At this rate, I figure the championship series should get under way some time in late December.

With only five games remaining in the season the first three-playoff slots are finally locked up. The first, second, and third place teams finished in the exact same order last year. The Sam Moran Club (20-2) clinched the division for the second year in a row and will meet the eighth place team in the first round of the playoffs. The Sidewalk Café (18-5-1) follows in second place and will face the seventh place team. The Seapoint Restaurant (15-6-1) finished in third place and will meet the sixth place team in the playoffs. The remaining playoff positions, four through eight, have not been decided as of this writing and will be determined later in the week.

Moving on to the games that were played in the last two weeks. After recovering from a very slow start, the Olde Time Hardware has fallen on tough times again. On Tuesday they were beat by the Corner Tavern 10-3, Sullivan’s Pub then handed them a tough 5-4 defeat on Wednesday, and on Thursday the Seapoint Restaurant edged them out 4-3 making it three losses in a row. As it stands today, Olde Time Hardware must win their last game (VS. Molly Darcy’s) to qualify for the playoffs or face a long off-season.

The Corner Tavern continued their storybook season last week as they won three games and gained some valuable ground in the standings. Before the week began, they sat in ninth place and out of the playoff picture. Today the Corner Tavern sits in sixth place and is looking at a possible playoff match against the Seapoint Restaurant, a team the Corner Tavern beat last week. For the pinstriped Corner Tavern that did not win a single game last year, this has been an enjoyable season.

Sullivan’s Pub continues to remain in the playoff hunt but just barely. After winning two in a row, 5-3 over Molly’s and 5-4 over Olde Time, the forty-plus team perhaps got a bit overconfident and it cost them as they dropped two in a row. On Thursday, the Corner Tavern upset them 11-6, followed by Monday’s 7-6 heartbreaking lost to Quencher Tavern. Sully’s Pub, who once had their playoff destiny in their own hands, now looks for help from other teams.

The Quencher Tavern is another team that is on the playoff bubble. Their recent three game winning streak has helped but Thursday’s 17-16 lost to non-playoff contender Bay View Liquors dealt them a serious blow to their playoff chances. Their last game against the Corner Tavern is a must win or they will face the possibility of missing the playoffs and bringing a sad ending to a very talented team.
