In what was one of the largest crowds in recent years to witness a softball game at M Stret Park, the M Street All-Stars rallied from a 10-5 score to pull out a dramatic 13-10 win over the Mayor Flynn Celebrity led team.

At 7:30, Mayor Flynn threw out the first ball to Dave Cowens officially opening the new, and beautiful, M Stret Park. The evening's festivities began at 5:30 with free cook-out sponsored by the Park & Recreation Department followed by a concert by Northern Lights. Magicians, clowns, stilt-walkers and children's races and activities all lent to the festive re-opening atmosphere.

As Mayor Flynn and Boston Park Commissioner William Coughlin addressed the overflow crowd, Flynn spoke of growing up and playing ball at M Street Park, which today is the jewel of the park system. The Mayor stated how very pleased he was of his administration for the incredible job they did renovating M Street. He also extolled how very important it is for all of Southie's residents to appreciate, care for and maintain thi sunique facility.

With that said and the first ball thrown, the Flynn team, Dave Cowens and Kevin Stacom of the Celtics, Mark "The Bird" Fydrich of Detroit Tiger fame, New England Patriots Brian Halloway and Daryl Johnson, former red Sox grats Tommy Harper and Mike Fornieles, Chicago Bear end Ed Smith, New York Jet running back Roley Hill, and fast-pitch phenom Larry Lucas took the field to the delight of the capacity crowd.

After a few scoreless innings and some fine pitching by Lucas and Fydrich (Flynn team) and John McGrath and Ed Bonano (M Street), the bats heated up.

Two veterans, Mike Larkin and Bobby Lerro, led the way for M Street. The younger guys then picked up the slack with a slew of hits and RBI's led by Marty Lee, Mike Gregorio, Ed Meagher, Richie Madden, Jim Menjin, Jim Higgins, and Mark Beale. Tom Greene and veteran all-star Bill Eliot then held the celebs in check with Eliot getting the win.

for the celebreties, Daryl Johnson hit a massive three-run homerun. Kevin Stacom had a homerun and two doubles, and Fydrich added a few hits. But the hitting star however, was former BC and New York Jet, Roley Hill who hit a massive homerun plus a triple and double. ex-red Sox reliever Mike Fornieles put on a defensive show in the outfield with seven put-outs; some on the spectacular side.

The night had something for everyone and the best part of it was the generosity shown by the fans in attendance in their donations to the Lonsdale Fire Fund.
