The standings are beginning to reflect the strengths and weaknesses of the teams as the league enters the fifth week of play.

On Monday, Molly Darcy’s handed the Olde Time Hardware their sixth straight loss 8-4. In the game, pitcher, Chris Burnell picked up his fourth consecutive victory since joining Molly’s. Wearing their new jerseys with new found pride, the 40+ club (Sullivan’s Pub) couldn’t beat the hot Boston Beer Garden team as they fell 11-2 in the middle game. Later in the night, Bay View Liquor pulled off an upset by knocking off the Quencher Tavern 12-9. Bay View was led by gutsy pitcher John Nee who was hit by two batted balls and had to tape his pitching hand to finish the game.

Tuesday was “shutout night” as all three games ended in shutouts. To start the evening off, the Sam Moran Club crushed Hub Video 23-0 as pitchers John Gregorio and Charlie Joyce combined for a no-hitter. But it was not all bad for Hub as they made several tremendous plays in the field, highlighted by Jamie Cahill’s diving catch in left and Wynne’s snare in center. In the middle game, the Sidewalk Café blanketed South Boston Check Cashing 22-0. Steve Lannan, Mark Senna, and “The Rifleman” pitched in for the win. In the nightcap, the Seapoint Restaurant handed the Corner Tavern their first loss of the season 16-0. Seapoint was led by Timmy Malley, who hit for the cycle, and pitcher Paul Alessi, who looked very sharp in the shutout win.

In the middle of the week, Quencher Tavern’s coach Bobby Sances held a team meeting before their game in an effort to regain some lost respect. The meeting paid large dividends for the Tavern as they hammered the Boston Beer Garden 22-2. Joe Pano’s diving catch in center field made the night’s highlight reel. In the middle game, Sullivan’s Pub tried to capture their youth but came up short and fell to Molly Darcy’s 10-2. Pitcher John McGrath didn’t have the defense or the offense behind him as Molly’s capitalized on their opportunities. Molly’s, Brian Fromm was the offensive star as he led all batters with four hits and five RBI’s. In the late game, the Sidewalk Café earned their second shutout in a row by defeating Hub Video 15-0. The Sidewalk’s offense was led by Dennis Lynch’s four hits and Tommy Connolly’s four RBI’s.

On Thursday, the Olde Time Hardware tasted victory for the first time when they “nailed” the Corner Tavern 11-5. The victory was costly for the Hardware when shortstop Charlie Diblasi and right fielder Michael Caputo, who were attempting to make a catch, didn’t see each other and collided. Both men laid in agonizing pain as the ball rolled slowly to the outfield. Caputo would stay in and finish the game but Diblasi had to be lifted as he felt pain throughout his entire body. The middle game saw the Sam Moran Club earn their second shutout in a row and their third shutout of the season as they trounced Bay View 9-0. Pitcher, John Gregorio, who earned the shutout, finished the game with eight strikeouts. Moran’s offense was led by Brendan Flynn’s two triples. The Seapoint Restaurant also earned their second shutout in a row as they blanked the South Boston Check Cashing team 14-0. Pitcher, Jay Malley made his first appearance of the year and looked sharp in the shutout win.

Continuing the trend of great pitching and solid defense, the Seapoint Restaurant earned their third consecutive shutout when they defeated Molly Darcy’s 9-0 on Friday. Tony Jiminez sealed the win for Seapoint when he cleared the bases with a double in the fifth inning. Paul Alessi earned the shutout win. The last game of the week was probably the best game of the season as Olde Time Hardware and the Boston Beer Garden locked horns for seven exciting innings. The Beer Garden rallied in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to tie the game. The Hardware threatened to take the lead in the seventh with two on and one out but Beer Garden’s shortstop, Chris Neff, made a great double play to end the inning. With momentum now on their side the Beer Garden wasted little time getting men on base as Dominic Shiner and Brett Reagan reached base with one out. Then Brendan Smith ended the game when he hit a ball back up the middle which deflected off of the pitchers glove and into center field. Shiner raced home from second with a big smile and the game winning run.
