Tonight at 6pm the M Street Softball League will kick off festivities with three skills contests followed by the all-star game. The leagues finest players will put their skills to the test in a winner take all format.

In the first contest, fans and players alike will watch as twenty-four strong armed players try to throw a softball the farthest in the 'Longest Throw Challange." Players will stand on or before the left field line and be given two attempts to try an outdistance one another with a long throw. Players competing in this event include Brendan Flynn, Joe Pano, Mike Whitney, Dany Flanagan, Sean Lamminen, Brian McDonald, and Jimmy Glynn. They all have strong arms but tonight we will find out who has the strongest.

In the second event, oxygen may be needed as the leagues fastest players circle the bases trying to be the "Fastest Man." Eackh player will be given two attempts to record their fastest time around the diamond. A few of the speed demons include Dorsey Connolly, Charlie DiBlasi, Scott Grant, John McCarthy, Tommy Halley, and Brendan Smith. Who will be the fastest?

The third contest of the evening is the most exciting as over twenty players will compete in the "Homerun Hitting Contest." Each player gets to select a pitcher of their choice and will be given ten swings. Right and center field will be fenced in to give all batters an equal chance at winning.

The favorite is past winner Jim Burgio, who leads the league with nine homeruns thi syear. Jim will be up against some big hitters in Ronny Gurley, Steve Muldowney, Joey DeGrandis, Brian Linehan, Tom Dickey, Marty Glynn, and Mike Smith. Can Burgio prove that he is the premier big hitter in the league in this tyoe of format? Will some unknown find their swing and snag the top prize?

Finishing the evening will be an eight inning all-star game that will see the league split into two great teams. The night is promised to be one full of excitement. Be there in person as your son or neighbor competes for the top prize in one of the skills contest.

Turning to last weeks league action, all eyes were on Seapoint on Wednesday as they looked to knock off the top seeded Sam Moran Club. But the team in the light blue jerseys had other ideas as they rode John Gregorio's masterful pitching performance and cruised to a 5-1 victory. Gregorio struck out five batters in a row between the first and third inning.

Seapoint nearly got themselves back into the game when they rallied in the fourth. But Ron Gurley, Joey Magee, and Jim Burgio flashed the leather to combine for a beautiful double play ending any attempt at a comeback.

Friday's middle game found the Sidewalk Cafe looking to revenge an early season los to the Olde Time Hardware. But for the first four innings the game looked like a carbon copy of the first meeting as Olde Time led 2-1. But in the fifth inning Sidewalk changed all of that as they batted around the order and plated six runs. With victory in sight, the Cafe boys added four more runs and got great pitching from the veteran pitcher Don Senna (he's dad to me).

Our appreciation goes out to Donna Ordway and Marie Mortell for their help in selling league raffle tickets. With your help, the league banquet (Sept 5 at Seapoint) will be a huge success. Thanks also to the new Mrs Shiner for her generous gift to the league which we will all "see" at the banquet.
