Mayor Raymond L. Flynn took time from his busy schedule to attend opening night of the 1984 M Street Softball League. The Mayor participated in picture taking sessions and remained to watch perhaps the best softball the city has to offer.

Broadway Haircutters, the 1983 runner-ups and Quencher Tavern, a new league entry, battled scoreless through four innings before Broadway broke the game open with an 8-run fifth inning. This proved to be all they would need as Broadway finished with an 8-0 victory.

The Mayor's appearance on opening night together with the Park Department's efforts and care of the park indicated the mayor's commitment to raising the quality of life in the neighborhoods. Indeed, it has been a long while since neighborhood residents have witnessed city employees and heavy equipment in South Boston parks and recreational areas.
