July 17, 2008 - the "Homerun Hitting Contest" made a triumphant return to the M Street Softball League tonight. With a slight wind blowing in from right to home plate coupled with the commissioner's decision to use a somewhat dead ball the first round only saw seven (7) total homeruns. At the completion of the first round, Shamrock Pub's Jose Diaz and the Dawgs Dan Brown were the co-leaders with 2 each. Joe Cavaleri (Shennanigans), Mike Selig (Dorn Mechanical), and Rob Rogers (Shamrock Pub) each were able to muscle one out which pushed them into the final round.

In the final round, Cavaleri launched two more homeruns with his second clearing the brown wall on First Street. He was now in the lead with 3 total homeruns. Selig followed but couldn't get in the groove in his first showing at M Street and finished the contest with 1 homerun. Diaz then looked to add to his total from the first round but took a while to get going before connecting and managed just one more giving him a total of 3 homeruns which moved him into a tie with Cavaleri.

The contest then heated up as the two remaining contestants gave the crowd of onlookers exactly what they were hoping to see. Rob Roger's stepped in to the batters box and struggled a bit through the first three pitches. But then he got hot...very hot. On the next offering, Rogers sent one high into the air towards the light tower in left - it was a majestic blast that sailed high and deep over the Wall on First Street. Roger's then followed with his 3rd, 4th, and 5th homeruns (all clearing the Wall) before cooling off. He would add another blast giving him a total of 6 homeruns which put him in the lead.

It was down to the last contestant in Dan Brown and he would need at least 4 homeruns to tie Rogers. Brown wasted little time in making his run as he homered on the second and third pitch he saw giving him a total of 4 homeruns. Two more outs later he connected on his 3rd, and then quickly smacked his 4th to tie Rogers. His fifth, which won the contest, was a deep shot to center field that cleared the wall on First Street. Rogers, who was standing next to me added, "now that was a shot." Brown, who stepped out of teh box to take a quick breather continued to rake em...homerun numbers 6, 7, and 8 also cleared the wall which gave him 10 total homeruns and a well deserved standing ovation from the crowd. What a show!!

The league would like to thank all of those contestants who participated in the contest...fielders, pitchers, and the 12 contestants. You each gave it everything you had and that is all you can ask from yourself. A special thank you goes out to Glen Glennon of Shennanigans...that crazy nut scaled the barbed wired fence to retrieve all of those balls that cleared the Wall. Thank you Glen!!

Game 1 - M Street All-Stars 9 Vs. Staten Island Blue Jays 0
July 18, 2008 - the Staten Island Blue Jays arrived to the field on time and in style tonight. They entered the field in center and single filed in uniform to the bench area closest to the stands at M Street. A few of the players exchanged pleasantries with some of the M Street All-Stars who were in the field retrieving balls for the homerun contest. As a commissioner of the league, it was a pleasant sight to see - something that myself and their manager Bob Riley have been working on for two weeks was actually happening.

After a brief introduction and a quick recap of the ground rules with umpires Earl Garrett and Bobby Hendricks, both teams were ready to play. The M Street All-Stars were led on to the field by pitcher Joe Venuti who earned the start with his impressive numbers while pitching for Doran Mechanical.

With two strikes to the leadoff batter, Venuti produced a pop out to second baseman Jared Barber and the first out of this historic game was recorded. New York then got a single by Drew before Venuti got some defensive help from shortstop Javy Colon who made two nice plays to end the top half of the inning.

M Street wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Colon leadoff with a four pitch walk and reached third on a throwing error. Doran Mechanical's Mike Selig followed with a deep sacrifice fly to center which scored Colon and M Street would never look back.

Venuti breezed through five innings, scattering three hits, while striking out two batters. It was a masterful pitching performance. While he was keeping the Blue Jays off the scoreboard the M Street Stars offense was doing their part. Sidewalk's Mike Smith led the second inning off with a triple to left center and scored on a sacrifice fly by the Brewers Brad Cole, 2-0. M Street added three more runs in the third inning when Doran's Mike Selig smacked a 3-run homerun to right center scoring Sidewalk's Tommy Connolly (walked) and Shamrock's Rob Rogers (single), 5-0.

M Street would put the game out of reach in the fifth when the Dawgs Dan Brown singled, Shamrock's Jose Diaz walked, an 2 RBI single by the Brewers Brad Cole, RBI single by Booze on First's Nick Hoehn led to four runs and a 9-0 lead for the M Street Stars. Shamrock's ace Sammy Acevedo then took over on the mound and closed the game out with two solid innings of work.

Star of the game for the Jays would go to their starting pitcher, Lou Washington. The crafty pitcher kept his team in the game while making some great defensive plays on the mound. Venuti and Acevedo were named the players of the game for the M Street Stars. Dorset Club's Paul Koslowski and New York's Drew led all hitters with two hits each. Shennanigan's Dave Conti made a great catch in right center taking away extra bases in the fourth inning.

Notes for game two: as agreed before the series started, the pitching rules will change for tonight's 6pm game. A strict modified pitching delivery will be enforced - no sling.

If your name appears on one of the rosters and you cannot make the game, then please ask your coach to inform the league.
